The amount of information about CPU's is bewildering to say the least. But as long as you do a little research, you will be able to select a new processor like a pro!
CPU's come in a couple different categories:
These are processors that are no longer manufactured and are not being used by companies like Dell in their new computers. Typically, these processors are a few years old.
Personally, I would advise even thinking about buying one of these for your system. While they may be incredabliy cheap, your computer will have to be upgraded sooner than most since your already starting the race late.
Budget processors are good at providing reliable processing speed while on a budget. These processors are good for running general applications (such as Microsoft Word). If your a gamer or multimedia user, don't even look in this batch of processors. You will need something faster.
These were the best processors....about six months ago! These processors are good for everything from general office use to gaming. Mid range processors also offer the best of both worlds, good performance at a reasonable price.
If you can't afford brand-spanking new processors, I would advice you to focus strictly within this category. Sometimes the best processors are those that have just dropped from the high end range. I would call them "Top Mid Range Processors". These processors are just slightly slower than most high end models, but their price tag is usually cut in half.
Do you want the fastest processor known to man currently? Do you want to walk into any retailer and automatically know if you can use all the software they sell? Well for that kind of freedom, comes an expensive price tag. High end processors can sell for twice or more what a mid range processor would sell for. While these processors are among the fastest on the planet, personally they don't justify the price tag.
