Building A Linux Computer

So you would like to build your own custom Linux box? Great! In this article we will be discussing hardware components. It doesn't take a genius to build your own computer from scratch, just some knowledge and elbow-grease (umm..wash your hands before touching the hardware!).

Due to the nature of the IT world and computers, I plan on leaving most hardware prices and specific hardware model numbers out of this article. My goal is to make this piece as timeless as possible. The moment I add prices and exact configurations is the moment this article will become obsolete.

Just to be sure everyone is on the same page, I will be building a fictional desktop computer that conforms to the ATX form factor (explained below).

Why Build Your Own System?

There are both pro's and con's to building your own system. If your looking for an cheap budget system, this tutorial may be not worth your effort since most budget systems cost far less than building your own. If you want a mid-grade to powerhouse performer, building your own system can be the a rewarding and cost-effective way to own a computer.

Pro's

  • By using hand-picked components you can create a system that lacks major bottlenecks. Most manufactures, in order to save on costs, use sub-standard components so they can sell at a cheaper cost.
  • Typically, it is easier to upgrade a custom built computer. This is mainly due to your knowledge of every component in the system.
  • A lot of components shipped by manufactures make it difficult (or impossible) to tweak the hardware. Buying your own components can allow you to tweak and overclock your system.
  • You can feel the rewards of building your own computer.

Con's

  • If your system doesn't work, your on your own. There is no commercial tech support number you can call to get your problems solved.
  • You may end up buying the wrong components there by increasing your costs.

Setting A Budget

Your budget will determine what you can afford and how many features your system will have. While trying to stay general, a $5000 computer will more than likely destroy a $500 computer performance-wise. You should set your budget and follow it.
